Jervois Tennis Club

History:

Jervois Tennis Club was established in 1960 after the existing West, Central and Thistle Clubs that were existing in the Jervois district had disbanded due to the 1956 Floods that hit the area. The original tennis courts were located in a quarry than tennis was played on the original courts located just inside the Oval gates, before being moved further inside the oval complex to the current site at the Jervois Combined Sporting Ground. The Club joined the LMHCTA and over the years has enjoyed a strong player base and much success, winning numerous premierships in various grades/divisions.

Location:

The township of Jervois lies 29km south of Murray Bridge, across the river by ferry from Tailem Bend. It was once a thriving Dairy Farming community, but drought and water restrictions have seen dairying dwindle to just a handful of farms today. The courts are located at the Jervois Oval complex right in the town. Combined with netball, football and cricket, the complex offers a great variety of activity for locals and neighboring families where they can interact and enjoy their sporting activities.

Junior Coaching:

The Club utilizes the services of a qualified coach during the regular summer season to nurture the junior players and encourage beginners to have a go and grasp the basic skills required before stepping out onto the court ready for match play. The past season comprised of 2 junior teams in competition and 14 youngsters practicing their skills every week, some of who should be ready to step up and join the competitors this season.

The Club also has had a team in the popular Friday night competition – played under lights at various venues players enjoy the social atmosphere along with a good hit of tennis as well!

Club Stalwarts: Many of the long-time residents of the Wellington-Jervois-Woods Point area have been associated with the Tennis Club. Families such as Noye, Warner, Field, McGowan, Barnett, Blake were prominent players for many years. More recently the Afford, Heading, Hicks familes to name a few have been regulars that have kept the Club running.
